About

Just a personal blog, which I will randomly post to when the mood hits. I have no idea why anybody would want to read it. Seriously, it sucks. If you're looking for something cool, check out my show.

Hanging with Gary Vaynerchuk

I’ve got to be honest, I’m not a fan of Jersey. I live in PA about a mile from the river and it’s a line I do not cross.

But Jersey does have a few redeeming qualities, such as Bruce Springsteen, cheap gas, and Gary Vaynerchuk. With that in mind, last night I went to a Tweet Up at Wine Library.

It was called a Tweet Up, but pretty much everyone there went to meet one person: @garyvee. And he brought the thunder. I’ve seen Gary’s many awesome videos and I’ve seen lots of his fantastic keynote speeches, but last night I got 3 hours of Q&A with a small group of maybe 20 people.

Arriving at Wine Library. This place is huge.

I got there a bit early and browsed Wine Library for a bit. Coming from Pennsylvania I’m used to wine stores run by the state…they’re all small and carry the exact same pathetic selection. Wine Library was a sweet surprise.

Those of us who were there for the Tweet Up gathered on the second floor and began introducing ourselves and chatting. A guy named Chris came up and said he recognized me from Awesomeology and enjoyed the show. That was pretty cool. Nice guy, too.

I happened to look over in the corner and saw a guy setting up a camera. I don’t watch many episodes of Wine Library TV (not a huge wine guy) but I immediately recognized Mott, who made an appearence in an episode I’ve seen. I went up to introduce myself and asked if Gary was planning to shoot an episode. Mott said that he probably would, so he was getting the camera ready.

Link It Up, Mott

A wine tasting station was set up where we were all able to sample 4 different wines. I was really hoping the wine would taste like fruit roll ups or socks or chocolate or something, but it turns out that my palette sucks. They all tasted like old grapes to me. Good grapes, though.

At some point, Gary appeared in the middle of the crowd and worked the room a bit while we all continued to chat. Ten minutes or so later, we somehow ended up in a back room where the premium wines were kept. And I do mean premium…there was a $12,000 bottle of wine in there.

Me and Garyvee

Gary started talking a bit about the wine industry, but we were a bunch of Twatters so the conversation quickly shifted to social media…past present and future.

After about an hour and a half we all transitioned upstairs (I think someone wanted to see the camera that they shoot WLTV with), and we wound up in Gary’s office/Jets shrine, which is where WLTV episodes are shot. He’s done quite a few GV.com’s from there as well. GV ripped open a box of WLTV wristbands and offered them to his guests (“take a bunch if you want”).

GV’s desk, familiar to you if you’ve seen the Howard Stern video.

The Jets spit bucket is flipping disgusting.

The conversation continued up there for another hour before we said goodbye.

Gary holding court

At one point, Gary mentioned Qik, so I pulled out the iPhone and made a quick Qik video

As I mentioned, I don’t really watch WLTV but I have seen all of the GV.com videos so a lot of what was said was familiar to me. Here are some things that I didn’t know:

  • He’s been watching back some of his recent keynotes to try to figure out why the hell he curses so much during them, especially since he doesn’t curse at all during WLTV or in real life. The best he can come up with is that it’s because he’s a huge Richard Pryor fan and it’s a subconsious thing when he’s walking around on a big stage with a large crowd.
  • A few months into doing WLTV, Gary was offered $30k per episode to bring it to a cable network (with 8 episodes guaranteed). He turned down a guaranteed $240k because he’d be giving up control of the show. That takes balls.
  • Wine Library has three Macs on the 2nd floor for their customers to use to find wines. They block Twitter :-(
  • Gary thinks that Twitter’s growing so fast that it will be impossible for people to keep up with in its current form. The hard part will be filtering all of that noise to show you what’s important to you. He thinks the next big play is in “social search” and he’s paying a lot of attention to stuff like Mr. Tweet.
  • Probably the most surprising thing to me was, in a time where everyone seems to be spending less and less time on Facebook and more and more on Twitter, Gary sounds like he’s headed in the other direction.

Three freaking hours with Gary Vaynerchuk. Do you know how much companies pay for that time? I mean, I don’t, but I’m sure it’s way more than the two bottles of wine I bought on the way out.

And yes, I went the wrong way on the way home. Three times, despite the navigaton system. Dirty Jersey strikes again!

How To Get Royalty Free Background Music For YouTube Videos

If you want to make a YouTube video, be careful of what music you use on it.  Are you legally allowed to use it?

Let’s be honest…if you’re making a personal video for fun and you’re using a random 50 year old song in the background, no one’s ever going to notice.  YouTube’s never going to pick up on it.  And even if they somehow do, they’ll just mute it or take down the video…it’s not like you’re going to get a bill for royalties owed.

That being said, if you’re doing something commercial (or something that you’d like to make money off of someday like Awesomeology) it’s pretty important that whatever you’re doing is 100% legal from the beginning.

Royalty Free Background Music (Free)

There’s a guy on YouTube (audionautix) who mades a ton of totally free music available to you.  Go to one (or all) of these 4 videos, and look over on the right in the description field…click on “more info” and you’ll see TONS of excellent music you can use.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyuzwdCt0GQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do1M5FzrIVc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cavny6zKqDE

How great is that?  It’s a LOT of stuff to go through, and there’s a good shot you’ll find someting that works.  I used his stuff as background music for the first 33-ish episodes of Awesomeology.

Royalty Free Background Music (Paid)

If you’re looking for something else (or specific sound effects), I personally recommend AudioMicro.  They’ve got an enormous selection of high quality stuff and it’s really cheap.

Quick tip if you’re looking for background music…find something less than a minute long with a seamless loop…that way it’ll only cost you 1 “credit” and you can just loop it over and over regardless of how long your video is.  Credits will cost you anywhere between $1 and $5 depending on how many you buy (and they never expire).

Whatever you buy is yours to use in whatever you want forever, royalty-free.  I’m currently using two tracks from there as the opening sound effects on Awesomeology.

Hope that was helpful!  If you have any questions, shoot away, I’ll do my best to answer ‘em.

It's a Ford Fiesta!

Listen to the following sentance…

Ford will give you a brand new Ford Fiesta for 6 months, they’ll cover all the gas and insurance, and all they’re asking in return is for you to go on a fun adventure each month (probably over a weekend that they’ll also pay for).

Did that sound too good to be true?

It’s not.  And it’s not just one person, Ford is gonna be doing that for ONE HUNDRED people.

Wait, it gets even better.  Winning is not random.  It’s not a lottery or something, all you have to do is make a short, fun video telling Ford why you should be chosen.  The best 100 get the keys.

Here’s my favorite so far.  These guys are definitely in, so your odds just went down to 1 in 99.  Get moving!

Your video has to be in by March 13th, and the full details can be found on the Fiesta Movement website

If you do enter because of reading this, let me know…I’ll help promote your video a bit!

PS - A side note to Ford, good call picking Julia to run this campaign.  A couple tweets and DM’s from Julia > a million of your stupid press releases.

I’m Thinking About Getting Rid Of My Cable Service

Getting rid of my cable bill will save $50 per month. It’s not a ton of money, but the more I think about it, the more I think I really don’t need to be paying it.

My Current Setup

I have an Apple TV with Boxee installed on it.  Because of the Apple TV I can watch my favorite podcasts (including my podcast Awesomeology, Diggnation, Totally Rad Show, Around The Net, etc) on my TV.  Thanks to Boxee I can watch full episodes of my favorite shows on my TV via Hulu, CBS.com, etc.

The only thing missing from Boxee right now is TV from ABC.com (it’s already available for Mac…Apple TV support is said to be coming soon).  That’s not a big deal in the short term, I can always watch from my computer.  Heck, I”ve got a couch in my office and I can use my iPhone as a remote to control it so I won’t even have to get up to click the “continue” button after the ABC commercials.

The One (Big) Downside

Basically the only thing that I won’t be able to watch if I drop my cable TV service is sports.  That’s kind of huge, I know.  But realistically I don’t watch all that many games, probably only a few per month (maybe 5-10 during baseball season).  So if I’m saving $50 per month, the question becomes would it be worth it to me to pay between $5-$15 every time I want to watch a game on TV?  I don’t think I would pay it.  So I should probably drop the TV service all together.

Besides, I can always go to someone else’s house to watch a big game.

I’ll Give The Whole “No Cable” A Test Period

But I don’t want to just cancel my cable on a whim, so my plan is to try living without cable for the rest of the month.  If I don’t miss it, I’ll cancel.

Here are the shows I watch, and my new schedule for watching them online:
